BMW and SamsungSouth Korea – The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two companies covers the i3 and i8 electric vehicles (EVs), plus future hybrid models, and will see increased quantities delivered over the medium term as well as further technological development.

Since 2009, the partnership with Samsung has provided BMW with the lithium-ion battery technology to power its BMWi vehicles. According to the vehicle-maker, environmentally-friendly production and recovery of materials during product development were important factors in the selection of Samsung as a supplier. The batteries are assembled on a modern line at BMW Dingolfing, with the cells the only supplied component.

“This MoU with the BMW Group demonstrates the trust in Samsung SDI’s future technology and efficient mass-production capabilities,” commented Sang-Jin Park, CEO of Samsung SDI. “Both companies are confident that this extended partnership will secure their leadership in future technologies.”
