Karen McCandless analiza cómo GM Joinville se ha convertido en la primera planta de automóviles en Sudamérica en alcanzar el certificado LEEDGeneral Motors (GM) ya tenía la sostenibilidad en mente cuando comenzó la construcción de su planta de producción de motores en septiembre de 2010 en Joinville, en el estado de Santa Catarina al sur de Brasil. Este deseo se plasmó en el certificado de liderazgo en diseño medioambiental y energía (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - LEED) del consejo estadounidense de edificios verdes.
