Detriot, MI. – Following CEO Ed Whitacre’s decision to step down, GM has announced that the company’s new CEO will be Dan Akerson, current GM Board Member and MD of the Carlyle Group. Akerson will also become chairman of the board at GM when Whitacre vacates the post at the end of the year.
Akerson has served on the GM board of directors since July 2009. In addition to his other roles, he has served as chairman and CEO of XO Communications and also Nextel Communications.
Said Whitacre about his resignation: “My goal in coming to General Motors was to help restore profi tability, build a strong market position and position this iconic company for success. We are clearly on that path. A strong foundation is in place and I am comfortable with the timing of my decision.”
