Since opening in 1922, BMW’s mother plant in Munich has been home to production of aeroplane systems and engines, motorcycles, ICE vehicle engines, many dozens of passenger models, hybrid vehicles and, since 2021, pure electric vehicles – all in the heart of a vibrant urban centre.

Now it is preparing for even more transformation with the introduction of new models on an EV architecture – the Neue Klasse – which is leading to changes in bodyshop, assembly and logistics. What’s more, the plant must adapt to carbon zero manufacturing, and deepen cooperation within the city of Munich for the decades ahead.
To this end, Plant Munich encapsulates the need for innovation, digital advances, upskilling of workers and collaboration across stakeholders. In an exclusive keynote interview and tour of a factory in full transformation. Plant Director Peter Weber discusses how Munich and the wider group will continue to transform. He outlines the key next steps to keep it at the heart of BMW’s production system for another century to come.
