At AMS North America 2025 conference, Björn Svensson, VP of automotive sales at ABB Robotics North America, discussed the growing value of the Automotive Manufacturing Outlook Survey, conducted annually by Automotive Manufacturing Solutions in collaboration with ABB. Now in its fourth year, the study tracks shifting priorities, challenges and solutions shaping the global production landscape.

Each year, the AMS/ABB Automotive Manufacturing Outlook Survey gathers insights from manufacturing leaders across OEMs, tier suppliers and technology providers to understand how the industry is evolving.

As Svensson explained, it serves as an important “channel of knowledge” for companies like ABB that need to align innovation with the realities of production.

“Everything we do has to correlate to the need out there,” said Svensson. “To constantly have different ways of understanding what’s happening and what’s needed - that’s crucial for us.”

While labour shortages and rising costs remained the top challenges in last year’s results, Svensson noted that automation, AI and localisation are becoming stronger strategic responses.

“We all have to cope with speed in a completely different way,” he said. “The people aspect remains critical, but we also need to embrace new technologies and take a more holistic view of manufacturing.”

Svensson also emphasised the role of peer-to-peer collaboration at events like these, which complement the survey’s findings by encouraging open dialogue and shared problem-solving.

“You can reflect, exchange ideas and learn from others, that’s where the real value comes,” he added.
