Opel prepares Rüsselsheim production for its next major model transition

Christoph Weis will take over Opel’s Rüsselsheim plant on 1 October 2026, succeeding Maike Seeber as the carmaker prepares production for the next Astra generation on Stellantis’s STLA ONE platform.

A change at the top has taken place at Opel's main plant in Rüsselsheim. Christoph Weis took the reins of management of the Hessian production site, effective 1 October 2026. The 41-year-old industrial engineer succeeds Maike Seeber, who is leaving the company at her own request, according to the manufacturer. Weis knows the site from various professional positions. His career at Opel began in 2001 with training in the field of mechatronics. After studying international industrial engineering, he returned to the carmaker in 2011 as an operations engineer. In the following years, Weis took on various tasks within the company.

Most recently, as Masterplan Manager, he was responsible for the strategic direction and safeguarding the future of the Rüsselsheim plant. This meant that even before his appointment he was already involved in central planning for the further development of the site. “Christoph Weis is both a clever strategist and a great team player.

With his clear focus on continuous improvement, he will successfully continue to develop our plant in Rüsselsheim, which he has known in the smallest detail for many years, and set the right course for the future of the Rüsselsheim site,” explains Opel boss Florian Huettl.

Weis himself announced that he wanted to further strengthen the competitiveness of the plant and prepare production for the coming Astra generation.

Plant prepares for next Astra generation

The change in leadership comes at a time of extensive changes in Rüsselsheim. The manufacturer currently produces the Opel Astra and the DS N°4 there in various drive variants. At the same time, preparations for the next generation of the Astra are under way. The model is also to be manufactured at the main plant. Adjustments in production are planned for the upcoming vehicle generation.

According to the company, the future Astra will be based on the new STLA ONE platform. The conversions required for this are part of the investments of more than €1 billion ($1.1bn) in Germany by 2030 announced by Stellantis.

With the appointment of Weis, the car manufacturer is relying on a manager from its own ranks for the plant management. His previous responsibility for long-term production planning thus creates personnel continuity during the upcoming conversion. Rüsselsheim also has significance within the group beyond vehicle production. Since 2023, Stellantis's Germany headquarters has also been located there.

For the new plant management, alongside ongoing production operations, the industrial preparation of the next Astra generation in particular is therefore likely to count among the central tasks of the coming years.
