The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is accelerating its electric vehicle strategy at Ampere’s Douai plant, preparing for the launch of the all-electric Nissan Micra and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. The modular facility now serves four brands with six EV models.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has advanced its European EV strategy, with production operations now increasing at the Ampere Douai plant. The facility is now gearing up to produce two new electric vehicles – the all-new Nissan Micra and the next-generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross – as part of the Alliance’s ongoing collaboration.

Ampere’s modular production line already manufactures six EV models for four clients: Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, and Alpine. This setup highlights the Alliance’s ability to share expertise and achieve flexible, cost-efficient manufacturing. Both the Micra and Eclipse Cross are to be built on Ampere’s advanced EV platforms – AmpR Small for Nissan and AmpR Medium for Mitsubishi.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, unveiled earlier this month, is the company’s first full-electric SUV for Europe and the first Mitsubishi vehicle produced in France. Nissan’s Micra, meanwhile, continues with a redesign to meet the needs of European drivers.

François Provost, newly appointed CEO of Renault Group, joined Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa and Mitsubishi CEO Takao Kato at the Ampere facility during the Alliance Operating Board meeting, marking their first collective visit to Douai.

By combining innovation, shared platforms, and local production, the Alliance says it is positioning Douai as a benchmark for sustainable automotive manufacturing in Europe.

Ampere Douai Plant

The Douai plant has undergone a major transformation to accommodate electric vehicles:

  • €550 million invested to build a new flexible standard line equipped with two modular platforms, Ampr Small (segment A / B) and Ampr Medium (segment C)
  • New workshop for assembling batteries

The site produces 4 brands:

  • Renault: 100% electric Megane E-Tech (2022), Scenic E-Tech Electric (2024) and the R5 E-Tech Electric (2024).
  • Alpine: A290 (2024)
  • Nissan Micra EV (2025)
  • Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (2025)

With this initial milestone, Ampere showcases its capability to manufacture six electric vehicles across four distinct brands, demonstrating a high degree of flexibility and brand-specific customisation.

Production:

  • 2023: 50 729
  • 2024: 89 527

· In May 2023, production went 100% EV.
