Shanghai Electric expands AI robotics for industrial manufacturing

Embodied intelligence pushes industrial automation beyond conventional robotics

Shanghai Electric has unveiled a new generation of 'embodied' AI robots, industrial AI agents and an AI-native smart factory architecture at WAIC 2026, signalling a broader push to embed autonomous intelligence across manufacturing operations.

The race to embed artificial intelligence into manufacturing is moving beyond software. Increasingly, industrial companies are seeking to combine AI with physical automation that can perceive, decide and act in complex production environments. At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance (WAIC 2026), Shanghai Electric set out its vision for that future through a broad portfolio of embodied intelligence robots, industrial AI agents and AI-native factory technologies.

Presented under the theme "AI for All: Smart Squad, Shining Without Limits", the company's latest developments span complete robotic systems, core robotic components, industrial software and factory architecture. Together they reflect an effort to integrate intelligence across every layer of manufacturing, from physical equipment on the shop floor to decision-making systems overseeing production.

According to Shanghai Electric, its embodied intelligence strategy is intended to address some of manufacturing's most demanding environments, including confined spaces, intricate assembly processes and applications requiring sustained precision.

Shanghai Electric broadens its embodied AI portfolio

The company's robotics portfolio is focused on five manufacturing applications including connector insertion, electrical operations, flexible sorting, intelligent assembly and pipe processing.

Among the most advanced systems on display was the SUYUAN bipedal humanoid robot. Equipped with 41 degrees of freedom, the robot combines multimodal visual sensing across its head and torso with a dual battery hot-swap system that allows continuous operation. Shanghai Electric says the platform is intended for inspection, material handling and assembly activities.

The TUOYUAN industrial wheeled humanoid robot is designed specifically for manufacturing environments. Powered by an embodied intelligence foundation model and force-position hybrid control, it performs multi-specification connector insertion, material sorting and loading and unloading of automotive sheet metal components.

Meanwhile, the Mermaid bionic wheeled humanoid robot is capable of recognising buttons, knobs and air switches before autonomously generating operating paths, reducing the need for manual programming. The company also demonstrated an autonomous pipe inner-wall chamfering robot developed for confined industrial environments. The system can process thousands of pipe hole edges while maintaining positioning accuracy within ±1mm and simultaneously transmitting operational data in real time.

Robots designed for real manufacturing challenges

Beyond complete robotic platforms, Shanghai Electric also highlighted several enabling technologies designed to improve robotic capability.

Its planetary roller screw delivers more than three times the load capacity of conventional ball screws, supporting higher-force industrial applications. Complementing this is the company's DexHand dexterous robotic hand, engineered to accommodate a wide range of gripping and manipulation tasks that demand greater flexibility than conventional industrial end effectors.

Together, these components reinforce the company's strategy of developing both integrated robotic systems and the underlying technologies needed to support increasingly capable embodied intelligence.

AI-native factories shift manufacturing towards autonomous operations

Physical automation formed only part of Shanghai Electric's announcement. The company also introduced 51 industrial-grade AI models and agents under its StarCloud Intelligent Manufacturing platform.

These AI models span research and development, manufacturing operations and maintenance, supporting applications including process optimisation and wind power facility maintenance.

Rather than operating as standalone software, the industrial agents are embedded within robotic decision-making systems and AI-native factory operations. Shanghai Electric says this enables manufacturing expertise to be digitised into reusable capabilities that support production scheduling, automated quality inspection and predictive maintenance.

The company argues that such systems move manufacturing from experience-based decision making towards data-driven optimisation.  The framework proposes an architecture capable of continuous, closed-loop optimisation of production operations, giving manufacturing facilities self-perception, self-decision and self-execution capabilities.

Built around First Principles, the architecture vertically integrates manufacturing processes, industrial software, AI agents and intelligent equipment while simultaneously eliminating traditional organisational hierarchies and breaking down data silos.

Its structure comprises three principal layers including an AI factory brain that functions as the central control system, embodied robots and industrial agents that serve as the execution network, and a physical twin that provides a digital mirror of factory operations.

Collectively, the announcements illustrate how embodied intelligence is beginning to evolve from experimental robotics into integrated manufacturing infrastructure. For automotive manufacturers seeking higher levels of automation while preserving flexibility and quality, that convergence between AI and physical production systems is likely to become increasingly significant.

Shanghai Electric says it will continue expanding industrial AI deployment, address the technical challenges associated with embodied intelligence in complex industrial environments and accelerate the large-scale rollout of AI-native smart factories that can be replicated across a broad range of manufacturing operations.
