Fiat 500 hybrid revives Mirafiori plant with scaled-up production and new investment
Production of the Fiat 500 Hybrid at Turin’s Mirafiori plant represents a significant reinvestment in the facility and marks a major step in Stellantis' manufacturing strategy.
Fiat’s historic Mirafiori plant in Turin is entering a new era with the launch of production for the Fiat 500 Hybrid, marking a milestone in Stellantis’ industrial strategy. Set to begin full-scale production in November 2025, the facility is expected to deliver 5,000 units by year-end and ramp up to a projected annual output of 100,000 vehicles. Pre-production units of the Fiat 500 Hybrid have already begun rolling off the line.
Olivier François, CEO of Fiat and Global CMO of Stellantis, emphasised the symbolic and economic importance of the plant’s revitalisation: “Our industrial plan for Italy puts Mirafiori and the 500 at the centre of our revival. In November, we’ll celebrate this milestone with the special edition ‘500 Torino' – a tribute to the city, its workers, and our roots. Turin means Fiat, and Fiat means Turin.”
The Fiat 500 Hybrid will be assembled using the FireFly 1.0L three-cylinder mild-hybrid engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. This powertrain, manufactured entirely in Italy, is designed to offer high efficiency with low operating costs.
Manufacturing operations at Mirafiori have been updated to support the production of this new hybrid variant, integrating Stellantis' broader push for electrification and sustainability. The production line incorporates modern tooling, modular processes, and digital quality controls that align with Stellantis’ long-term electrification roadmap.
2019 investment paves the way for Mirafiori revival
The revival of the Fiat 500 Hybrid at Mirafiori in 2025 owes much to the foundational investments made in 2019, when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) launched a future-facing transformation of its historic Turin plant. That year marked the 80th anniversary of the Mirafiori plant and the beginning of its reinvention as a cutting-edge hub for electrified mobility.
In July 2019, FCA broke ground on a new €700m assembly line dedicated to the Fiat 500 Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). The move came amid a broader €5 billion investment plan for FCA’s operations in Italy between 2019 and 2021.
The Fiat 500 BEV marked the beginning of an electric mobility centre of excellence within Turin, employing over 260 specialists at the time and serving as a launchpad for a broader electrification strategy. The new line’s initial production capacity was set at 80,000 units annually, with approximately 1,200 employees dedicated to the operation.
With more than 28.7m vehicles produced since its opening, that foundational work is now bearing fruit with the return of the 500 Hybrid to Mirafiori. While the 2019 investment focused on BEVs, the infrastructure, talent pool, and electrification expertise developed during that phase now support Fiat’s broader powertrain strategy – including mild-hybrid solutions.
