China - The zero emissions vehicle is now rolling off production lines at the Dongfeng Nissan plant in the Huadu District of Guangzhou. The model has been designed specifically for Chinese consumers, and the company hopes it will "usher in a new era of electrification."
"We're confident that the Sylphy Zero Emission rolling off the production line today will become a main player in the EV market here," commented Hiroto Saikawa, Nissan's president and CEO. "It's going to pave the way for our Nissan Intelligent Mobility strategy in the Chinese market."
Saikawa added that China will be crucial to the Nissan's midterm plan, in which it hopes to sell one million electrified vehicles a year by 2022 while also boosting annual revenues by 30%. Dongfeng has also recently outlined a plan to introduce 20 new electrified models by 2022.
The Nikkei newspaper recently reported that Nissan is spending 100 billion yen (US$900m) on the construction of a new vehicle assembly plant in Wuhan – the capital city of Central China’s Hubei province. Predicted output for the facility is 200,000 to 300,000 units per year.
As well as marking the start of Sylphy production, Nissan and Dongfeng are celebrating the milestone of making ten million vehicles together since they began their partnership 15 years ago.
