Germany – The OEM’s global lead plant on conventional powertrain production will also become a competence centre for electric vehicle components. Battery production is to be added as a new product group providing more than 250 new jobs in a specialist e-mobility production area. As part of the new EV focus, Untertürkheim will lead on lightweight construction and assembly of electric modules for front and rear axles.

Untertürkheim will becomes Daimler’s fourth battery factory. Two existing plants are located in Kamenz, eastern Germany, and plans for another in Beijing, to be developed with Chinese joint venture partner BAIC, were announced earlier this month.

Daimler is investing several billion euros into modernising the Untertürkheim site as part of its 2015 transformation plan. By 2025, the car maker plans for fully electric vehicles to account for between 15% and 25% of its total unit sales.
