BASF TodaJapan – Closing an agreement that was announced in October 2014, the new joint venture will provide cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries, as used in the automotive and other industries.

In Japan, BASF Toda will conduct R&D, production, marketing and sales for a wide range of cathode materials, particularly NCA (nickel cobalt aluminium oxide), LMO (lithium manganese oxide) and NCM (nickel cobalt manganese). Internationally, the company will leverage BASF’s global network and push for growth in the battery materials market, which has been identified as a key area in future.

Headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, BASF Toda has production facilities in Sanyo-Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture, with a total production capacity for cathode materials and their precursors of around 18,000 metric tons. Its workforce numbers 80 individuals.

Leading the joint venture will be CEO Yasuo Anno, who most recently served as associate senior corporate executive officer of Toda Kogyo, and president of Toda Energy Materials.
