Automation safety has a new name
- Omron Scientific Technologies
STI's Safety Products group recently merged with a subsidiary
of Japan-based Omron Corporation. "We believe this transaction
will benefit customers by creating a global leader in the industrial safety
market, with the resources of a worldclass organization such as Omron and
the North American automation safety expertise of STI," said Joseph J Lazzara,
Vice Chairman of Omron Scientific Technologies, Inc (Omron STI).
Omron STI is a leading provider of machinery safeguarding products
designed to protect workers around machinery, automated equipment, and
industrial robots in the automotive industry.

With well over 100 machine and process safeguarding solutions
available, including safety laser scanners, perimeter access guards,
safety light curtains, safety interlock switches, safety relays, pressuresensitive safety mats and edges, and fully integrated safety controller
networking solutions, Omron STI has the right safeguard for your automotive
manufacturing application.
In addition to its comprehensive family of machine safety solutions,
Omron STI provides safety services such as safeguarding equipment
installations, machine safety risk reduction assessments, and the design
and custom fabrication of guarding solutions.
Omron STI is proud to supply safety solutions to automotive customers
around the globe, including:
• DaimlerChrysler
• Ford
• General Motors
• Goodyear
• Honda
• Land Rover
• Michelin
• Nissan
• Samsung
• Toyota
Omron STI safety light curtains provide a safety zone around hazardous
production machinery. The concept is simple, yet extremely effective. When
an opaque object such as a hand or workpiece interrupts at least one
transmitted infrared beam defining the guard zone, the light curtain controller
sends a "stop" signal to the protected machinery.
Omron STI's safety laser scanner is one of the newest technologies to be
used for machine area safeguarding. Safety laser scanners can be used as
a safeguard on both stationary and moving equipment. One of the main
benefits of the safety laser scanner is its versatility and non-intrusive presence, making it perfect for equipment that requires regular maintenance and
cleaning.
Omron STI's safety network
dramatically simplifies applications that require multiple devices.
Programmable safety circuits are incorporated to facilitate efficient
designing and modifications.
Moreover, safety I/O terminals can be added to increase safety I/O capacity
for distributed allocation through the network. DeviceNet wiring on
the existing network can be used as is, facilitating efficient design by
expanding on the existing system. The programmability of safety circuits,
expandability of I/O using the network, and compatibility with the DeviceNet
open network effects major changes to the framework of previous safety design systems.
