Expanded metal is increasingly seen as a universal solution to a multitude of automotive challenges. Patented in 1889, this unique material has grown from a ubiquitous building material to become a crucial component in not just automotive, but also aerospace, engineering and filtration applications.

The expanding process involves feeding a solid piece of metal into a purpose built machine which slices and stretches the material in a single process, to a specified pattern. Each pattern then has its own individual set of properties such as high strength to weight ratio, large open area or unique aesthetic benefits. The strength to weight ratios of expanded metal were recently the subject of a detailed study carried out at the University of Teesside. The subsequent report detailed how expanded metal could, in many cases, demonstrate greater load bearing abilities than sheet metals. The choice of material available is almost as inexhaustible as the variety of patterns - mild, galvanised and stainless steel, aluminium, brass, copper, gold, silver, titanium - the list is almost never ending, and again, each type of material brings its own unique characteristics to expanded metal.

Typical applications include radiator, decorative and speaker grilles, seat supports, filtration applications, exhaust systems and acoustic housing. Indeed, anywhere woven or welded wire is currently used the chances are that expanded metal could offer a stronger, more environmentally friendly and more cost effective alternative.

More bespoke applications include front grilles for sports and kit cars, which are marketed under our Grilla brand and can be designed and manufactured to specific requirements. These can be fitted during manufacture or afterwards by the vehicle's owner. Also available is explosion suppression safety foil: formed from very thin metal it can be placed inside fuel containers and tanks with only minimum displacement. Once installed explosion suppression safety foil can prevent fuel containers from exploding when pierced and even when directly ignited. Environmental issues have never been higher on the agenda of everyone associated with the automotive industry, and expanded metal can help ease the pressure of conforming to new guidelines. The process of producing expanded metal creates little or no waste. This is very different to materials such as perforated metal, which can create huge amounts of waste, and, although this can be recycled, it creates a further industrial process, increasing carbon emissions.

The Expanded Metal Company has a growing list of customers operating within the automotive industry. From major multinationals to exclusive and bespoke sports car manufacturers, all have identified a need for expanded metal mesh and had their challenge solved by The Expanded Metal Company.
