At the start of the 21st century, Leipzig and the surrounding
area are developing into a region with first-class
automotive expertise. The car production and automotive
components industry clusters is one of the youngest in Leipzig - yet
it's also unfurling its potential as the most dynamic. Ever since
1999 when Porsche announced it would be producing its Cayenne
sport utility vehicle in Leipzig, the automotive industry has been returning
to the Leipzig region after a century. This initial impetus
from one of the world's most prestigious car manufacturers was
followed less than two years later by BMW's decision to build its new plant for
its 3-Series in Leipzig.
More than 150 component suppliers in the region are profiting from the
reorganisation of industry. The OEMs' manufacturing depth will decrease, this
production being shouldered by medium-sized suppliers, whose network will
expand over the next 10 years. Additional follow-up investments will take place
not just in the components and service industries, but also in many adjacent areas.
The components industry in the region and beyond is expanding.
Conditions are improving
The conditions for the commercial success of suppliers are improving.
Networks between businesses as well as colleges, universities, research centres and the
business chambers are emerging at a fast pace. Leipzig offers low costs, longer and more
flexible working hours than elsewhere in Germany, and 30 per cent lower wages. This
is a region where the turnover of industry increases more than six per cent per annum and it provides
well trained employees.
Leisure activities
Attractive leisure facilities, a varied arts scene, an intact environment and pleasant
living conditions are some of the prized soft factors among potential investors.
Leipzig sets a great example in many areas of everyday life. This place has an
atmosphere of its own, combined with an impressive vitality and urban style. Superb
architecture from centuries past blends with a colourful arts scene, making for an
exciting mix of heritage and modernity.
